The Highlands
The Highlands, an island of residences in upper Santa Ynez Canyon, is the most recent large-scale development in Pacific Palisades, California. In 1921, land was purchased with a simple stroke of pen; roads were scratched on the earth with horse-drawn ploughs; street names were selected by an erudite minister from lists submitted by the Women's Forum, and zoning was established one afternoon by a pair of men with hastily bought colored pencils.
Today it's a new ballgame - roads and tracts have reached the top of the eastern ridge. Perhaps drawing their clue from the name of the canyon, Santa Ynez, and seeking an overall theme for a massive, up-scale development, the developers have uniformly chosen Spanish names, some of them memorializing persons affiliated with the enterprise. Here are some street names:
Avenida De Cortez - 'Avenue of Cortez' (Spanish)
Avenida De La Herradura - 'Avenue of the Horseshoe' (Spanish). The configuration of the road resembles a horseshoe.
Avenida De Santa Ynez - 'Avenue of St. Agnes' (Spanish). The patron saint of chastity, Santa Ynez, was a Roman maiden who lived in Rome during the reign of Emperor Diocletian and was martyred in 304 A.D. Today, a basilica marks her burial site. The street derived its name from its location in Santa Ynez Canyon.
Calle De Palermo - Calle 'Street' or 'Road' (Spanish). Palermo is a developers name
Calle De Estribo - 'Street of the Stirrup' (Spanish).
Calle Del Jonela - Street named for Jonel Yelverton, project consultant's daughter.
Calle De Seville - 'Street of Seville' a city in Spain.
Camino De Yatasto - Camino 'Road' (Spanish). Yatasto is the name of a famous racehorse from Argentina.
Cuesta Linda - Cuesta 'Slope' (Spanish). 'Linda' refers to Linda Bankard, longtime executive secretary for Headland Properties. Linda 'Pretty' (Spanish)
Cumbre Alta - 'High Summit.' Cumbre 'Summit' or 'Peak,' Alta 'High' (Spanish). The developer translated it as 'Hill covered in Shrubbery'
Cumbre Verde - 'Green Mountain.' Cumbra 'Summit' or 'Peak,' Verda 'Green' (Spanish). The developer translated it 'Green Hill covered in Shrubbery'
El Bosque - 'Forest' or 'Woods' (Spanish).
Michael - A relative of one of the partners in The Highlands development.
Monte Alto - 'High Mountain' (Spanish).
Monte Grande - 'Large Mountain' (Spanish).
Monte Hermoso - 'Beautiful Mountain' (Spanish).
Piedra Morada - 'Purple Stone.' Piedra 'Stone,' Morada 'Purple' (Spanish)
Vereda De La Montura - 'Horse Riding Trail.' Vereda 'Trail,' Montura 'Riding Horse' (Spanish).
An area developed in The Highlands is The Summit, a planned community with streets laid out and named by Headland Properties, again where the prevailing theme is Spanish, with individual names honoring the Development's managing partner, his family and business associates.
Chastain Parkway - Named for W. Charles Chastain, President of Headland Properties, Inc., and Managing Partner for the project from its inception in March 1965 to the present.
